Excessive Underarm Sweating
What is Axillary Hyperhidrosis?
Axillary Hyperhidrosis, or excessive underarm sweating, is a common problem which causes a lot of unhappiness. An estimated 8 million Americans suffer from this condition, which tends to start in late adolescence. Untreated this problem may continue throughout life.

Sweating is embarrassing, it stains clothes and complicates business and social interactions. In severe cases the underarms can be damp, sticky or even drenched with sweat continuously, even at night and regardless of the temperature.
What is the cause of Axillary Hyperhidrosis?
The exact cause of hyperhidrosis is unknown. Heat and emotions may trigger hyperhidrosis in some, but many who suffer from hyperhidrosis sweat nearly all the time, regardless of their mood or the weather. The condition has been linked to over-activity in the sympathetic nervous system and a genetic link has been found in families.
What treatments are currently available?
In 2004 the American FDA approved Botulinum Toxin Type A (Botox) to treat severe underarm sweating known as Primary Axillary Hyperhidrosis that cannot be managed by topical agents such as prescription antiperspirants. When used to treat Primary Axillary Hyperhidrosis, small doses of the toxin are used to stop the release of the chemical messenger acetylcholine, temporarily blocking the nerves in the underarm that stimulate sweating. This method can be quite effective, but normally only lasts from 4-6 months.
But there is a more permanent solution…
As the sweat glands are located just beneath the skin where the skin and the underlying fat meet, Smartlipo Laser Lipolysis can be used to remove or destroy the function of these glands.
Am I suitable for this procedure?
Before being considered a candidate for this procedure, you will need to be evaluated by Dr. Gregory for other potential causes of excessive underarm sweating, such as hyperthyroidism.
Quick, Comfortable Treatment
After a thorough check-up and discussion, Dr. Gregory will administer a local anesthetic to the underarm area to make you comfortable. A very fine fiber-optic cannula is put under your skin, to deliver laser energy to liquefy the superficial layer of fat in the armpit where the sweat glands are. This injuries/ destroys a large percentage of the sweat glands. Most of this oily fat residue is removed; the remainder is absorbed by your body naturally over a few weeks.
Safe, Fast Procedure with a Minimal Recovery Period
No hospitalization is required, there are no major side effects, and recovery is very fast. You can even return to work the day after your treatment if you wish. You may feel sore for up to a week and need to limit your arm activity (sports, lifting above your head, etc.) during this time.
Cost
Consultations to assess if you are suitable for this procedure are free of charge. The cost to your social life, and the life of your clothes – priceless! |
